WANING MOON RITUAL FOR LETTING GO
Note: One can perform this ritual any time you need to release and let go, but the waning moon period (as the moon wanes from the full moon to the new moon) is especially correlated to releasing, clearing, and making room for the new (rituals of increase are performed during the waxing moon phase).
The waning moon phase is a time of release and reassessment when we ponder the house placement of the next NEW MOON. Each astrological house represents a particular domain … what astrological house does the next NEW MOON bring to life?
Since the waning moon signifies RELEASE, it is helpful to let go of any “deadwood” and clear your field of any thoughts, behaviors, attachments, or activities that no longer serve your highest good or ultimate goal. That way you have more psychic space to actually focus on what is truly important and giving mental space to allow change to happen.
WANING MOON RITUAL FOR LETTING GO
This ritual is designed to help release the stressors of our day-to-day lives, as we prepare for a “fresh start” at the NEW MOON.
You will need:
1 white candle
1 black candle
1 pink candle
salt (Himalayan or Sea Salt); Epsom salt
incense - sandalwood, sage, frankincense
- or an aromatherapy diffuser
many small pieces of paper and a pen
flameproof/heatproof dish
Ritual Bath:
Make sure you have taken a shower ahead of time so that your physical body is already clean. The spiritual bath is meant to clear you energetically, and ritual should always be approached with respect and decorum. Would you approach a goddess unbathed?
Make sure your bathtub and entire bathroom are spotless! Again, you are setting up sacred space for a ritual.
Combine Himalayan or sea salt with Epsom salt and add to a very warm bath.
Collect any of these herbs and tie them up in a cloth: lavender, rosemary, or sage, and put them in your bath. Alternatively, you can make a “tea” out of these herbs and strain them into your bath. You can also add these essential oils to your bath when you add the salts.
As you sit in your bath and inhale the steaming herbs, visualize the steam breaking up any tension in your body or your thinking, and … exhale. Ask your body, mind, and spirit to release any thoughts that are not aligned to your highest potential, and be willing to look at where you may be harboring self-doubt or fear.
With each inhalation:
Affirm that you are breathing in the universal life force, the source of all creation, and acknowledge that you are ONE WITH THE ESSENCE OF THE UNIVERSAL SOUL.With each exhalation:
Affirm that the outgrown thoughts and beliefs are transformed into NEW energy that can be redirected … since energy is neutral, it’s up to us to decide to redirect it into a more appropriate form for our present circumstances.Light your white candle and incense.
They symbolize peace, truth, and protection. Meditate for a few minutes on what that means to you now: is there anything in your life that is not in sync with your highest truth?Light the black candle.
The color black is an absence of color, and symbolically it absorbs … the black candle will represent the absorbing / transforming power of the dark waning moon, and … as we work with it … imagine any pain, anger, or disillusionment getting pulled out of you, and absorbed/transformed by the energy symbolized by the black candle. As you meditate on releasing …
Take one of the small pieces of paper, and —with as much emotion as you can muster— write down one thing you’d like to release/transform.Light one corner of the paper, and immediately drop it into your heatproof dish. (A large ashtray or ceramic pot with some sand or soil in it would be ideal.)
REPEAT with any and all emotions, thoughts, fears, resentments, gripes, angers, excuses, obligations, etc. etc etc etc etc …! UNTIL YOU FEEL CLEAR! If you still feel bad … KEEP GOING!!!
When you’ve cried, griped, bitched, cursed, and moaned as long as you can stand … put out the black candle.
Breathe.
Take a moment and feel the clarity and space of release … it feels good, right?
If you STILL don’t feel clear, go back to writing and releasing.
When you actually feel clear …
Light the pink candle.
Put on your favorite music, something that makes you feel energized, happy, and motivated! Now focus on filling up the spaces left where the old pain was … by writing affirmations.Write affirmations.
What are affirmations? Phrases of INTENT on what you want your truth to be in the real world. Always write affirmations in the present tense: “My creativity energizes me and empowers others.” “I am aligned to my highest good now and always.” “I resonate with the universal power and I am an agent for change in the world.” etc etcAlways write affirmations in the present tense … not “I will” … Keep repeating them over and over until YOU FEEL IT and breathe in your NEW TRUTH.
If you still don’t feel it … ask yourself: is there something in my affirmation I don't really believe? THEN … maybe go back to releasing?
When you are finished, put out the pink candle.
You can do this ritual for three days prior to the new moon, allowing the candles to burn all the way down on the third day.OR … you can do this ritual only once, allowing the candles to burn all the way down on the first day.
